A recyclable packaging box comprises a cardboard exterior with an inflatable inner lining attached to the inside for protecting items packed in the box. An item to be packed is placed in the box, and the inner lining is inflated via a self-sealing valve. The lining preferably comprises a number of discrete, individually inflatable sections, which are connected by one-way valves allowing the sections to be inflated via the single self-sealing valve, but preventing deflation of multiple sections if only a single section is compromised, e.g. pierced. The box may be moved on a conveyor and positioned by pistons to allow automatic inflation of the lining (see fig. 3), or may be inflated by hand, for example using a snap-off tube (not shown). The box may be stored flat and erected when required. The box may also be filled with biodegradable foam. |
