The tool has a machining unit comprising a work spindle (18) for receiving a machining tool and a spindle motor (17) for driving the spindle. Sensors (20, 21) detect operating parameter e.g. current consumption, of the unit. An evaluating unit (24) is connected to the sensors and a programmable control unit (25) for processing measurement values. An optical display element (28) is arranged in direct viewing range of a tool operator for displaying normal, critical and dangerous operating states of the machine tool based on data from the evaluating unit, and comprises LEDs.
