A computing device comprises a plurality of interengaging, modular, computing units 1. Each unit comprises a housing 10, a data processor within the housing, a plurality of external electrical power and signal connectors 12 connected to the data processor and a plurality of physical coupling elements 13. The housing presents a plurality of facets 10a, 10b, on which the power and signal connectors 12 are arranged in connector sets 11. The power and signal connectors 12 transfer electrical power and communications signals with adjacent modular computing units 1. The physical coupling elements 13 secure adjacent modules 1 to one another and may comprise permanent magnets. The modules 1 may have a flat configuration and may be hexagonal in shape. Facets 10a may be inclined upwardly at an angle and alternate with facets 10b that are inclined downwardly at the same angle. Any number of modular computing elements 1 may readily be connected to one another in various different 2D and 3D arrays. Modular units may be arranged in a tank with liquid coolant. |
