An embodiment provides a system for automated hospital workforce load driven scheduling optimization, including: a processor; and a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to: access scheduling information for a hospital unit comprising a number of staff available for working in the hospital unit and a staffing ratio for the hospital unit; access a projected census value calculated reflecting current and future patient movement and progression within and between units; calculate a number of projected workers needed for the hospital unit based on the projected census value and the staffing ratio for the hospital unit; and output the number of projected workers needed for the hospital unit.
