Olefines are reacted with compounds of formula XA1R2 in which X represents a halogen atom and R represents a hydrocarbon radical containing no unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds on the carbon atoms bound to the aluminium, the reaction being effected in the presence of an organic aluminium compound in which all three valencies of the aluminium are bound to carbon, or in the presence of a dialkyl-aluminium hydride, an alkyl aluminium dihydride or an aluminium hydride as catalyst. R may be any aliphatic, alicyclic, substituted or unsubstituted aromatic, mixed aromatic-hydroaromatic or mixed aliphatic-alicyclic hydrocarbon radical and is preferably a benzyl or alkyl group. The ethylene adds on between the aluminium atom and the atoms X and groups R. Olefines may be displaced from compounds of formula XA1R2 by reacting with an olefine other than ethylene, at least one R group being other than that corresponding to the displacing olefine. The catalyst may be inactivated after the reaction if desired by addition of A1X3 or the corresponding alkyl aluminium dihalide or sesquihalide. The reaction mixture may advantageously be treated with a potassium halide and the olefines distilled off from the complex obtained. Bis[b -(cyclohex- 3-enyl)- ethyl] aluminium monochloride is reacted (Ex6) with ethylene to yield a product of formula <FORM:0879269/IV (b)/1> This on oxidation yields an alcohol mixture of average composition <FORM:0879269/IV (b)/2> The above organo aluminium compound may be decomposed with methanol and hydrolysed with dilute sulphuric acid to give a hydrocarbon mixture containing n-butane, n-hexane, n-octane, 1-ethyl-3-cyclohexene, 1-n-butyl-3-cyclohexene, 1-n-hexyl-cyclohexene and 1-n-octyl-3-cyclohexene. Specification 770,707 is referred to.
