<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an input device that identifies the orientation of a user's hand. <P>SOLUTION: An input device 1 includes a touchpad 10, a thumb detection unit 21, an index finger detection unit 22, a hand orientation identification unit 23, and an operation recognition unit 24. The touchpad 10 includes a detection surface for detecting a touch by a finger. The thumb detection unit 21 detects a touch position of a finger having touched the detection surface of the touchpad 10 first, as a thumb touch position. The index finger detection unit 22 detects a touch position of a finger having touched the detection surface of the touchpad 10 second, as an index finger touch position. The hand orientation identification unit 23 identifies the orientation of a hand performing input to the touchpad 10, on the basis of the thumb position detected by the thumb detection unit 21 and the locus of the index finger touch position detected by the index finger detection unit 22.
