A web of paper 10 is pressed against a drying cylinder or a machine glazing cylinder 12 by rollers 13, 14 and subjected to high-speed jets of hot air &c. discharged from openings 23 in a series of pressure compartments 16 ... 20 in a hood 15, the air being re-circulated, by axialflow fans 30 driven by motors 34, via exhaust compartments 26 ... 29, steam heaters 32 &c. and compartments 67, 68, 69. The jets are directed over the surface of the paper towards the exhaust compartments, the last of which, 29, has an outlet 22 leading to a heat-exchanger for pre-heating the inlet air either directly or with the use of water as an intermediate, and a further heat exchanger. Thereafter, the inlet air may be further heated by a live-steam heater, and led into the hood at 21. Spring-loaded panels 601 may be opened by piled up paper, and facilitate removal of torn paper after a break. Trap-doors in these panels allow access to the exhaust compartments 27 &c.
