A generally upright structure, such as a converter chimney, adapted for the flow of hot gases therethrough, is provided with a plurality of passages along the wall thereof for the flow of cooling medium in separate streams downwardly therein, means being also provided for varying the rate of flow of cooling medium in each individual passage in response to variation in the temperature in such passage. A converter chimney, Fig. 1, comprises a water jacket 4 divided by vertical partitions into passages each provided with a valve 8 subject to a thermostat 7 and feeding a discharge conduit 6, water being fed by a gravity reservoir 3 supplied by a pump 11 and feed pipe 5 under control of a valve 9 regulated by a level control 10. In a modification, Fig. 9, the upper reservoir feeds in succession cooling sections 18, 25 and 31, the two latter having their own reservoirs 19 and 27 respectively, and each reservoir having its overflow pipe 40, 47 and 42 feeding a discharge conduit 36. Valves 22, 29 control the passage of water to their respective reservoirs under control of thermostats 38, a similar thermostat controlling passage of water from the lowermost segments to the pipe 35 leading to the conduit 36. A double-seat valve, Fig. 11 (not shown), may be disposed in the annular reservoirs 19, 27 controlling the passage of water from one superposed cooling section to the next. Modifications, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), show the use of tubes as the individual passage, and the upper reservoir may be closed and subject to gaseous pressure, Fig. 6 (not shown). The cooling sections may be disposed inwardly of the stack, the inner walls presenting a convex or polygonal shape, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown).</p> |
