An airstrip for vertical take-off aircraft comprises a bearing surface protected from jet blasts by overlapping slabs substantially covering the surface, each slab carrying a device by which it is fixed to the surface. As shown, the airstrip comprises a layer 1 of concrete, on a foundation 8, in which are embedded lugs 6 on metal slabs of hexagonal form arranged in layers 4 and 5. The layer 4 is preferably spaced from the concrete, e.g. by a sheet 2 of oiled paper on which may be printed the locations of the lugs 6. Alternatively, asbestos or other insulating or refractory material may be used. In an alternative form (not shown) a single layer of overlapping slabs is used.</p> |
