A method of large-radius edge-preserving low-pass filtering is performed on a digital signal having data points. The method includes computing a weighted average of a signal layer at vertices spaced a distance apart such that an amount of the vertices is less than an amount of the data points and producing, for each of the data points, a large-radius edge-preserving low-pass filtered signal based on the weighted average of the signal layer at vertices neighboring the data point. |

1. A method of edge-preserving low-pass filtering a digital signal having data points, the method comprising:
computing a weighted average of a signal layer at vertices spaced a distance apart within an influence zone consisting of a range of the data points surrounding a respective one of the vertices such that an amount of the vertices is less than an amount of the data points and a weight given to a respective one of the vertices in the weighted average of the signal layer is based on a difference between values of the data points within the influence zone and a value at the respective one of the vertices in an object layer representing a blurred version of the signal layer, the value of the vertices of the object layer being read from a memory and the values of each of the data points within the influence zone being determined via a raster scan performed during the computing; and producing, for each of the data points, a large-radius edge-preserving low-pass filtered signal based on the weighted average of the signal layer at the vertices neighboring a respective one of the data points. |
