The active material of at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode of the electrodes is formed from a metal compound which stores and releases lithium ions through conversion reactions. The lithium secondary battery includes a polyimide-base resin as a binder.

A lithium secondary battery comprising: electrodes configured in a structure in which an active material layer, including an active material and a binder, is held by collectors; and a non-aqueous electrolytic solution, wherein the active material of at least one of a positive electrode and a negative electrode among the electrodes has an oxide of iron which does not form an alloy with lithium, selected from the group consisting of FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4; the oxide of iron has a particulate shape with a mean particle diameter of each particle of 0.1 μm or more and less than 30 μm based on a laser diffraction type particle size distribution measurement, and the particle consists of the oxide of iron; an amount of the oxide of iron in the active material layer is 85 mass % or greater where the total weight of the active material layer is 100 mass %; and the binder consists of 100% by mass of a polyimide-base resin.
