A method for controlling a multi-hop mesh wireless data network by a controller, comprising: characterizing by the controller data on radio frequency (RF) links at a plurality of nodes of the wireless data network; analyzing the data on the RF links to compute parameters for one or more alternate routing paths from a source node to a destination node in one or more hops across the wireless data network; loading the parameters for the alternate routing paths to the source node to direct the source node on how to route a data packet from the source node to the destination node through any intermediate nodes; receiving statistics on the delivery of a plurality of data packets from the source node to the destination node; and adaptively adjusting the parameters for the alternate routing paths in response to the data on the RF links and the statistics on the delivery of data packets.
