<p>The invention comprises 3-nitrophenothiazine (Beilstein nomenclature) and the preparation thereof by cyclization in an anhydrous solvent medium, at elevated temperature and in the presence of an acid-binding agent, of 2-amino -21-iodo-41-nitrodiphenylsulphide. 2-Amino -21- iodo -41- nitrodiphenylsulphide is prepared from 2-aminothiophenol and 3,4-di-iodonitrobenzene.
