[Also in Group XIX] In a multi-stage stepping circuit, each stage is operable to represent information stored therein and adjacent stages are coupled together so that information may be sensed when adjacent stages are operated. Each stage comprises a number of cryotrons arranged in two parallel circuits, one of which is conductive and the other resistive when the stage is operated. The cryotrons may be of wire or film-type, the latter being as described in Specification 862,178. Horizontal control windings 16, 17, Fig. 3, when energized separately have no effect on a vertical conductor IN-1, IN-2, but when energized simultaneously, increase the resistance of this conductor which may therefore be called a gate. Each stage, Fig. 1, comprises two paths. When current is flowing through gate B3, control winding C3, and gate D3, the third stage is off. When current-flow through gate A3, control winding A1, control winding B3, gate C3 and control winding E4 the third stage is on. Assuming that stages 1 and 2 are initially on and stages 3 and 4 off, then the application of a P1 pulse to stages 1 and 3 turns on stage 3 and turns off stage 1. Potential for reading out was initially applied to terminal 20 through gates C1 and C2 in series and this potential is now switched to terminal 21. A pulse P2 applied to stages 2 and 4 then steps the pattern again.
