An apparatus includes: a processor for performing a data access on data stored in a memory system; a heterogeneous memory system including a plurality of storage media; and a memory interconnect for transmitting the data access from the processor to at least one of the storage media based on one or more performance characteristics related to each storage medium type of the storage media. Each type of storage medium is associated with one or more performance characteristics. The heterogeneous memory system includes volatile and non-volatile storage media.
