<PICT:0890311/IV (b)/1> Acetylene is formed by the partial combustion of a mixture of oxygen and methane. The mixture is formed in the apparatus shown which comprises an inlet pipe 21 for preheated methane and two inlet pipes 17, 19 for preheated oxygen. The methane and oxygen are mixed in an annular mixing zone 12 having a plurality of interconnected chambers 23 and the mixture passes into an annular divergent chamber 13 having a distributor 14 leading to a combustion chamber.
