Disclosed is a method for increasing the catalytic performance of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts using iron and halide containing compounds. The service life and/or catalytic activity of SCR catalysts are increased between 10-15% over an operational time of 2000-4000 hours by reducing or preventing the poisoning and/or contamination of an said catalysts via the addition of iron-bearing and halide-bearing compounds to the combustion zone or flue gas stream of furnaces, boilers, heaters, kilns, or other flue gas-, or combustion gas-, generating devices. Iron-bearing compounds are selected from the group consisting of metallic iron, iron oxides, and iron carbonate compounds such as iron (II) oxide, iron (III) oxide, and iron (II) carbonate. Halide containing compounds are selected from the group consisting of The method of claim 1, wherein the halide-bearing compound is selected from potassium bromide, potassium chloride, potassium fluoride, potassium iodide, sodium bromide, sodium chloride, sodium fluoride, sodium iodide, calcium bromide, calcium chloride, calcium fluoride, calcium iodide, aluminium bromide, aluminium chloride, aluminium fluoride, aluminium iodide, transition metal halides with the proviso that the transition metal is not iron. |
