The invention relates to a fuel tank system for an internal combustion engine, comprising a fuel tank and a storage element for temporarily storing hydrocarbons. The fuel tank and the storage element are connected together such that hydrocarbons outgassing from a fuel which is located in the fuel tank are stored in the storage element. The storage element is connected to a purge air pump, by means of which fresh air can be pumped to the storage element, whereby the hydrocarbons are released from the storage element and supplied to the internal combustion engine for a combustion process. The aim of the invention is to provide a fuel tank system which is designed such that the seal of the fuel tank system can be regularly checked during the driving operation of the motor vehicle. This is achieved in that the purge air pump is connected to a valve unit, said valve unit having a single valve cylinder which allows fresh air to be pumped from the purge air pump in the direction of the internal combustion engine in a first position and reverses the pump direction of the fresh air in a second position, whereby the fresh air is pumped from the purge air pump into the fuel tank. |
