[Also in Group XIII] In a roller assembly comprising an upper and a lower roller, the upper roller consists of a rigid stationary core surrounded by a rotatable hollow cylindrical casing the space between the core and the casing being divided longitudinally into two chambers, the lower of which is filled with liquid under pressure. A pump is connected to the lower chamber for maintaining the pressure therein and means including pistons operating in cylinders to which air or liquid under pressure may be admitted are provided for applying pressure to the ends of the core. In the assembly shown, the lower roller is similar to the upper, the space between each core 3, 4 and its associated casing 6, 7 being divided by plates 12 into chambers 8, 11 or 9, 10. The upper core is constrained to move vertically under the action of pneumatically operated double-acting pistons 16, the air supply to and from the associated cylinders 15 of which is conducted through a reversing switch 25 and piping 30, 32, 28 and a differential regulator 31 intermediate the piping 30, 32. The roller " nip " chambers 8, 9 are supplied with pressurized oil through piping 18 by a pump 17 from a tank 22, any oil leaking into the chambers 10, 11 remote from the " nip " being returned to the tank by the pump. The oil pressure is regulated by a device 20 and the pressure exerted by the pistons 16 on the ends of the core 3 is regulated automatically against the oil pressure in the chambers 8 and 9 by means of the differential regulator 31 to which the oil pressure is admitted via a pipe 34.
