This hydraulic pump drive system assists an engine E by controlling an electric motor using a control device, and rotating and driving the rotating shaft of a hydraulic pump. The control device calculates an engine torque command by using a torque command calculation unit, on the basis of the deviation in rotations calculated by a rotation deviation calculation unit, and also calculates the actual fuel injection amount on the basis of the engine torque command by using a fuel injection amount calculation unit. In addition, an assist torque determination unit determines the assist torque, and the torque change estimation unit estimates a torque reduction coefficient. Furthermore, an assist determination unit determines the value of the assist torque command, on the basis of the torque reduction coefficient, to be zero or a torque corresponding to the assist torque, and the drive control unit controls the electric motor according to the assist torque command value.
