A process for purifying 1,4-butanediol (BDO) comprising 2-(4'-hydroxybutoxy)tetrahydrofuran (acetal) comprises the steps of a) extracting the BDO using an ether as extractant, b) separating the phases into a BDO-rich phase and an ether-rich phase, c) distillatively removing the ether from the BDO-rich phase, d) distillatively purifying the BDO obtained in step c), e) supplying some or all of the ether-rich phase to a hydrogenation step.
