Class 34(1) Atmosphere drying apparatus comprises a desiccant bed, a vessel defining a chamber for housing and supporting the bed, an inlet and an outlet opening for the atmosphere to be dried disposed at opposite ends of the vessel, a plurality of hollow pipes adapted to be covered by the bed and to communicate with the ambient atmosphere extending across the vessel and having outwardly-extending radiation fins, and means for heating the pipes of such form that when the heating means are operative the pipes and fins will uniformly heat the desiccant bed and when the heating means are not operative the pipes will enable relatively rapid cooling of the bed to be accomplished. The apparatus comprises chambers 14, 16, Fig. 1, each having an inlet and outlet line 12, 24 at the lower and upper ends respectively, for upward passage of the atmosphere to be dried therethrough and a bed of solid desiccant 58, Fig. 5, supported on a screen 54, through which bed vertically spaced, transverse pipes extend, the pipes having radiation fins 64 and heating coils 62 for reactivating the bed when saturated. The pipes extend through opposite walls of the chamber and are open ended to communicate with the ambient atmosphere to enable cooling of the bed. The atmosphere is introduced in turn to one of the chambers from the line 12 by a double acting valve 18 for passage through the bed and exit through a line 24 common to both chambers having a swing check valve 30 at the exit of each chamber. A vent valve 20 or 22 in the chamber 14 or 16 is opened when the bed therein is be reactivated to reduce the pressure and so automatically cause a small portion of the dried atmosphere from the other chamber to pass through a relatively small aperture in the check valve associated with that chamber and to purge moisture released from the bed by the heating coils. |
