User inputs from controls (16, Figure 1), preferably part of a Human Machine Interface (HMI)) on a steering apparatus (10, Figure 1), particularly a steering wheel or steering column, can be classified using a system comprising a resistor ladder circuit 56 configured to measure an output across a resistor ladder from the controls, a data memory storing pre-determined output data relating to each control, and a processor 60 configured to receive the output from resistor ladder circuit 56, compare the measured output with pre-determined outputs stored in a data memory, and classify the measured output to a corresponding pre-determined output indicating a control selection. Processor 60 also monitors and corrects for a difference between the measured output and the corresponding pre-determined output. Typically the output data comprise a voltage band for each control, with an offset adjusted according to the difference between a measured voltage and an initial voltage. Resistor ladder 56 may optionally comprise means to debounce the signal from the controls. |
