A handheld parking control device comprises an image capture component, such as a camera, an image display component and a communication component for communicating with a remote server. The device captures and processes image information and compares the information with information from the remote server. The information received from the server may comprise site-specific data such as site restrictions, allowed wait times, parking contravention types, vehicle registration details, vehicle entry times, parking payment data, exemption data and parking bay occupancy data. The parking patrol officer uses the image capture component to input vehicle details possibly using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) software and the device identifies any relevant parking infractions based on the received information from the server. Fines or penalty notices can be printed by the device and full details, including captured image, GPS data and time information can be displayed and stored in a log. Some details can also be transmitted to the server. Parking tickets which have a bar code could also be scanned by the device in order to identify contraventions. The device may be operable to automatically identify parking contraventions without requiring specific operations from the patrol officer. |
