A method of precision manufacturing a lawn bowling ball from a generally spheroid blank 1000, comprising the steps of securing the blank 1000 by its spigot (100, fig 2) in a primary chuck 200, machining a first portion of the blank 1000, transferring the partly machined blank 1000 to a secondary chuck (400, fig 6) in axial alignment with the primary chuck without intervening handling, and machining a second portion of the blank 1000 to produce a finished bowl ball. The chucks may move towards each other via parallel rails during the transfer of the blank 1000 and may be automated via computer-controlled actuation. The primary chuck may be a collet chuck with a pull-back arrangement for precisely positioning the blank in the chuck. The secondary chuck may be a three-arm jaw chuck that securely grips the blank. The machining may comprise both lathing and milling operations. |
