The specification discloses a structure of an optical fiber which increases transmission capacity per unit area by decreasing a spacing between cores of a multicore optical fiber. The most conspicuous characteristic of the present invention is that a refractive index of a trench surrounding a central core is not less than a refractive index of a trench surrounding an outer core, in a trench type multicore optical fiber having 7 cores so as to increase cutoff wavelength of the central core. Also, the optical fiber is designed such that a crosstalk between the central core and the outer core is greatly decreased. Therefore, a spacing between cores, which is restricted due to the crosstalk generated after transmission over a predetermined distance, is set to be greater than a spacing between cores which is restricted due to the increase in the cutoff wavelength, such that elements, which restrict spatial efficiency, are optimized. According to the present invention, by replacing the single-mode optical fiber with the multicore optical fiber, transmission capacity per the unit area can be maximized while using the conventional single-mode optical fiber-based modulation method, and a large capacity optical transmission system, which can be applied to a dynamic optical network, can be economically realized. |
