904,721. Feeding magnetic tapes; brakes. BIRMINGHAM SOUND REPRODUCERS Ltd. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 15, 1959], No. 42533/59. Class 40 (2). The brakes of a magnetic recorder, whose tape is fed as described in Specification 866,351, comprises pads 53, 54, acting on tape-spool carriers 12, 15 and carried by levers 51, 52, pivoted on the downward extensions of tape guides 38, 40, and normally engaged with the carriers by the action of a spring 55. A handoperated member 65, movable into the recesses 66, 67, 68 of a # slot to engage the drives corresponding to record/playback, rewind and fast forward wind, carries with it a lever 47, guided by a fixed pin 43 such that a pin 45 executes corresponding movements as indicated by the arrows adjacent thereto in Figs. 7, 9 and 8 respectively. The shaped ends of the levers 51, 52 are engaged by the pin 45 to release and to permit re-application of the brakes symmetrically for the slow tape-speed of record-playback, Fig. 7, and with delayed release from and prior engagement with the trailing carrier during fast winding in either direction, Figs. 8, 9. The arrangement may also provide heavier braking of the trailing carrier. In combination this provides that the tape is at all times under tension and prevents spillage.
