Ortho-bromotoluene is prepared by passing vapours of o-bromo-p-tertiary butyl toluene and/or o-bromo-m-tertiary butyl toluene in a stream of inert gas at 300-400 DEG C. over an alumina-silica catalyst or an acid-washed Sepiolite catalyst so as to remove the butyl radical without substantial removal of the methyl radical or the bromine.
