A viable particle counting apparatus comprising: a light emitting element which radiates a light toward a liquid containing a detection target, a wavelength of the light causing a peak wavelength of an autofluorescence light emitted from the target irradiated with the light and a peak wavelength of a Raman scattered light to be different from each other; an optical filter which reduces transmission of the Raman-scattered light emitted from the liquid out of lights emitted due to an interaction of the target or the liquid with the light radiated by the light emitting element and transmits the autofluorescence light emitted from the target; and a determining device which determines whether or not the target contained in the liquid is a viable particle, based on a light obtained after the Raman-scattered light is reduced by the optical filter.
