The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for automatically extinguishing a fire in a battery pack. The apparatus for automatically extinguishing a fire in a battery pack comprises: a battery pack (100) having a space formed therein; a sensor unit (200) provided in the battery pack (100) and sensing the outbreak of the fire in the battery pack (100); and a gas generating unit (300) provided in the space of the battery pack (100) and jetting a gas when a fire breaks out in the battery pack (100) by interworking with the sensor unit (200). The method for automatically extinguishing a fire in a battery pack comprises: a first step (S10) of collecting data regarding a change in temperature in the battery pack (100) and regarding the generation of smoke; a second step (S20) of determining whether the fire breaks out in the battery pack (100) through the data collected in the step (S10); a third step (S30) of informing a vehicle in which the battery pack (100) is installed about the fire in the event of the fire; a fourth step (S40) of operating the gas generating unit (300) provided in the battery pack (100) to jet a nitrogen gas to an interior of the battery pack (100); and a fifth step (S50) of determining whether the gas generating unit (300) is normally operated. When the fire breaks out in the battery pack (100), the fire can be suppressed at an initial stage to secure the safety of a vehicle occupant.
