The device (1) has a guide rail system arranged in a charging opening. Two horizontally oriented guide rails (2, 3) act as a lateral guiding for a material basket. Stop parts (4a, 4b) are guided to the material basket along the guide rails. Deflection of the material basket opposite to the charging opening is prevented by locking devices (5a, 5b). The locking devices include two vertically arranged sleeve-like zones in which pins are arranged perpendicular to the material basket. A funnel receives the material basket that is arranged between the guide rail system and the charging opening. An independent claim is also included for a method for positioning a deflectable material basket in a charging opening of a furnace.
