The present invention relates to a method for controlling dimming of a backlight based on image characteristics. According to the present invention, an apparatus comprises: the backlight for providing a light source; a panel for adjusting a light transmittance rate of the light source based on each input pixel value and outputting a visual signal; an analysis unit for calculating a brightness characteristic value and a degree of inclination with respect to an input image; and a control unit for reducing the intensity of the light source, provided to an area of the panel to output each pixel value in the image as a visual signal, from a currently set intensity based on the calculated brightness character value and the degree of inclination and applying the intensity of the light source to the backlight. The control unit determines a degree of reduction to be greater at the currently set intensity when the degree of inclination is small in a condition with the same brightness character value compared to a case with a high degree of inclination. The degree of inclination is an average of each degree of inclination calculated for the pixel values in the image. Each degree of inclination is a value obtained by dividing a value of difference between two pixels by the distance between the pixels. |
