An organic compound is connected to a compound of a higher oxidation state but lower than that of the oxide of carbon, in a fuel cell with the evolution of electrical energy. The electrodes are associated with suitable catalysts and electrolyte and it is stated that these should be carefully selected in accordance with the principles set forth in the Specification. C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbons, C 1 -C 18 alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ethers and carboxylic acids are suitable starting materials and may be emulsified if not water soluble. The end product can be separated by conventional means from electrolyte extracted from the cell but a fractional distillation process may be carried out by running the cell at suitable pressures and temperatures or by a two-phase recovery system for products only sparingly soluble in the electrolyte used.
