The present invention is applicable to the technical field of biological identification, and provides a fingerprint identification method and a fingerprint identification device. The method comprises: extracting minutiae of an input fingerprint pattern by a statistical method; and performing fingerprint matching according to the extracted minutiae to obtain a fingerprint identification result. According to the method provided by the embodiment of the present invention, the directions of the minutiae are calculated using statistical information, a statistically significant descriptor is added for the minutiae, and the steps of minutiae similarity calculation by using the descriptor and region matching by using direction field and gradient field information of an overlap region are added in the matching process. Therefore, instability and poor specificity of fingerprint feature expression in a traditional algorithm are avoided, and the accuracy of fingerprint identification is improved.
