PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain speedy and very efficient detection, determine a fault ONU, and reduce an influence on an uplink service, in a passive optical network system.SOLUTION: Disclosed are an ONU detection method and apparatus and the passive optical network system. The method comprises steps of: detecting an ONU identification code within a vacant period or a blank time slot of an uplink window; and determining an ONU corresponding to the ONU identification code as a fault ONU in accordance with the ONU identification code.
