The invention relates to a piston engine (1) comprising a connecting rod that is equipped with a compression piston and an adjusting mechanism for adjusting the compression piston, said adjusting mechanism including a first supporting piston (27.1) in a first supporting cylinder (31.1) and a second supporting piston (27.2) in a second supporting cylinder (31.2) of the connecting rod. The first and second supporting cylinders (31.1, 31.2) are each connected to a first control line via which a medium flows into and out of the supporting cylinder in order to adjust the supporting cylinder (31.1, 31.2). At least one additional, second control line (32) for at least draining the medium extends into at least one of the two supporting cylinders (31.2) in order to adjust the associated supporting cylinder (31.2). The invention further relates to a method for operating a piston engine (1), preferably a VCR piston engine according to one of the preceding claims, wherein a compression piston is made to travel by means of an adjusting mechanism of a connecting rod, said mechanism adjusting the compression piston. In the disclosed method, a supporting piston (27.2) of the adjusting mechanism in a supporting cylinder (31.2) opens or closes at least one control line (32) extending laterally into the supporting cylinder (31.2). Also disclosed is a method in which the control line (32) that extends laterally at a mass force end is opened or closed in order to obtain an intermediate position of the adjustable compression piston. |
