A stiffener for shirt collars comprising a flexible support and two reinforcements of different size is made by cutting out the reinforcements from strips of thermoplastic or thermoadhesive coated material and securing them to the flexible support by heat and pressure in a single operation. The smallest reinforcement is cut from a strip placed in a groove 5 between a punch 2 and a die plate 3. When the punch 2 passes through the aperture 4 it cuts out the small reinforcement R1 and co-operates with a raised portion 6 to form a second punch which cuts out the large reinforcement R2 from a strip placed in a groove 9 between the die plate 7 and the die plate 3. The reinforcements are then adhered to a flexible support T placed between the die plate 7 and a heated pressure plate 10. In operation the strips and flexible support are placed in their positions between the plates and pressure is applied to the top plate 10 to cut out and adhere the reinforcements to the flexible support in a single operation. More than two reinforcements may be applied in a similar manner.</p> |
