In an internal combustion engined motor vehicle expanding pulley gearing controlled by a change-over valve and by engine suction, a buffer tank and a non-return valve are provided between the suction side of the engine and the change-over valve. The axially movable flange 3 of an expanding V-pulley, such as described in Specification 907,944, is controlled by atmospheric pressure in chamber 6, connected to the atmosphere by pipe 10, and by suction in a chamber 5 connected to the engine inlet manifold 15 through an accelerator controlled changeover valve 13, a buffer tank 39 and a non-return valve 37. At small throttle openings the chamber 5 is connected to atmosphere through pipe 9 and vent 21, the belt 29 working on the smallest diameter of the pulley. From one quarter to three quarters throttle the chamber 5 is open to engine suction through pipe 9, valve 13, pipe 40, buffer tank 39, and non-return valve 37; the tank and non-return valve providing the greatest depression in the chamber 5 to ensure the highest gear ratio and unwanted ratio fluctuations. At over three-quarter throttle, or on kick-down, the valve 13 moves to the extreme right to connect chamber 5 to atmosphere through pipe 9 and vent 21 resulting in a low ratio for acceleration.
