A turbine blade 1 e.g. for a tidal turbine has a polyurethane (PU) coating 6, at least in a region of the trailing edge 4 and tip 5 of the blade. The coating protects the blade material from erosion caused by cavitation, i.e. the collapse 8 of vapour pockets 7. The coating 6 may be applied as a layer in a mould before adding a plurality of layers of composite material and curing together to form one half of a turbine blade. The polyurethane coating could alternatively be applied to an existing blade (figure 4) e.g. for maintenance purposes. |
