An aerial array for use in aircraft comprises a plurality of cylinders 13 electrically connected in series with input connectors 12, 12a, all but the last cylinder in the series containing a coaxial conductor electrically connected by connecting rods 29 to the preceding cylinder in the series, the wavelength # at the frequency of use being such that the radiation pattern of the array is substantially similar to that # which would be obtained from a - aerial. As 4 described the aerial is matched by either variable inductors 21, 22, connecting the rods 29 to ground or by variable capacitors in series with the cylinders and it is stated that a radiation pattern and bandwidth results similar # to that obtainable from a - aerial of length 4 equal to the sum of the heights of the cylinders. A fairing 30 of, e.g. fibreglass, surrounds the elements and this may be filled with polyurethane foam to rigidly secure the elements. The array may be mounted horizontally or vertically to provide either horizontal or vertical polarization. |
