921,753. Separating liquid particles from gases. LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. GES FUR. July 24, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 23736/61. Class 123 (3). Apparatus for separating finely divided liquid particles from gases comprises a closed vessel, a conduit passing through a wall of the vessel, a gauze collar extending coaxially with and downwardly from the end of the conduit inside the vessel so that the lower end of the collar is submerged in a pool of liquid in the vessel, and a duct through the vessel wall to one side of the plane which passes through the junction of the conduit and the collar and which is normal to the axis of the conduit, the collar and duct being on opposite sides of this plane. Gas with entrained liquid enters a vessel 1 through a conduit 4, large and medium sized droplets of liquid being thrown directly into a pool of the liquid 7 which stands in the bottom end of the vessel 1 and which serves to seal the lower end of a gauze collar 6. Any droplets impinging on the conduit walls flow down and drop off its bevelled lower edge 5 into the liquid 7. Coalescence of the smaller particles occurs as the gas passes through the gauze collar 6 which may be of metal or synthetic material of mesh size 0.1 mm. to 3 mm., the preferred mesh size being 0.3 mm. The liquid either runs down the gauze into the liquid or is blown off in droplets which impinge on the inner walls of the vessel and again flow down into the pool of liquid 7. Gas substantially free of liquid leaves the vessel by a duct 8 located opposite the upper third of the conduit while liquid overflows through a pipe 10. In another form, not shown, the conduit enters horizontally at the side and is bent through 90 degrees inside the vessel and the gas exit duct is located at the top of the vessel above and coaxial with the vertical section of the conduit. Formulae are given relating maximum and optimum velocities in the apparatus to the specific weight of the liquid and to the dynamic viscosity of the gas concerned.
