A secure entry system comprises an authorisation apparatus including a reader for reading data, and a record medium 10, such as a passport. The reader and the record medium, or a member connected to the record medium, include one or more pairs of visible and/or tactile markings 56, 58, 66 which, only when the record medium is correctly presented to the reader, cooperate with one another in a predetermined manner. The markings are preferably visible markings with the cooperation being visible to the person presenting the medium to the reader. The markings may be provided on a border region 22 of the reader and the outside of the record medium 10 and may be aligned side-by-side when the reader and medium are correctly positioned. The markings may be the same on the medium and apparatus or may be different. The record medium 10 may have UV fluorescent ink markings with the reader having a UV light source. The secure entry system may be used at a geographical border or airport and the record medium may be a passport. The invention ensures that the reader and medium are properly aligned for accurate reading, increasing flow through the entry system. |
