Aromatic ethers are prepared by reacting an alcohol with a vinyl-substituted aromatic compound in the presence of an acid catalyst and a salt of a metal that can exist in at least two valency states. The alcohol is preferably a primary or secondary aliphatic alcohol and specified alcohols include methanol, ethanol, propanols, butanols, amyl, lauryl, allyl and benzyl alcohols, ethylene glycol and monobutyl ether and cyclohexanol. Specified vinyl aromatic compounds include styrene, vinyl-toluenes, p-benzylstyrene, chlorostyrenes, nitrostyrenes, divinylbenzenes and vinyl-naphthalenes. Specified metal whose salts may be used are copper, cobalt, mercury, titanium, zirconium, chromium, manganese and iron. In examples hydrogen chloride is passed into ethanol, n-butanol or ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether and the solution so obtained is reacted with a suspension of cuprous chloride, cobaltous chloride or mercuric acetate in styrene to give ethyl or n-butyl or n-butoxyethyl a -phenethyl ether.
|
