A system for characterizing a channel of a wireless network, the system comprising: a transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit an OFDM signal including pilot signals over a network and in an environment that distorts the transmitted OFDM signal, wherein the pilot signals are utilized to establish a RF channel response at a subcarrier level, the pilot signals including reference symbols that are transmitted at set intervals; and a receiver configured to receive the OFDM signal, synchronize the OFDM signal in frequency and time to determine the reference symbols within the OFDM signal, perform a fast Fourier transform on the OFDM signal to determine in-phase and quadrature components of each subcarrier symbol within the OFDM signal, and equalize the in-phase and quadrature of each subcarrier signal based on the pilot signals, wherein the transmitter includes two transmit antennas, the transmit antennas being configured to transmit the same OFDM signal with different reference symbols within the pilot signals.
