Methods of enhancing wound healing

The present invention relates to ionic compositions for enhancing wound healing, particularly in the sinonasal cavity. The ionic components of the composition can include potassium, calcium, rubidium, zinc, bromide, and magnesium in an isotonic solution. In other embodiments, the ionic components of the composition can include magnesium, bromide, sulfate, sodium, and chloride. Methods of enhancing wound healing, enhancing sinonasal mucosal healing, promoting mucosal reciliation, and debriding tissue by administering the compositions of the present invention are also presented.

1. A method of enhancing wound healing in mucosal tissues in a subject comprising:
administering a therapeutically effective amount of a sterile isotonic solution to a subject in need thereof comprising:
a therapeutically effective amount of potassium ions;a therapeutically effective amount of rubidium ions;a therapeutically effective amount of calcium ions;a therapeutically effective amount of zinc ions;a therapeutically effective amount of magnesium ions;a therapeutically effective amount of bromide ions;a therapeutically effective amount of counterions wherein the counterions are selected from the group consisting of citrate, chloride, bromide, sulfate, hydroxide, bicarbonate, carbonate, phosphate, lactate, glutamate, acetate and combinations thereof; anda pharmaceutically acceptable carrier wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is water or aqueous solutions of a hydrophilic polymer; wherein the sterile isotonic solution contains no sodium ions; wherein contacting a mucosal tissue wound with the solution at least once per day enhances wound healing of the mucosal tissue.
