The present invention relates to a mobile terminal which can detect a plurality of tabs applied to a mobile terminal main body, and a method for controlling the same. The mobile terminal comprises: a display unit for displaying any one among input panels, each of which is partitioned into a plurality of regions; a memory unit including information on predetermined character strings corresponding to each of the regions; a detection unit for detecting a plurality of tabs tapping the display unit on which one of the input panels is displayed; and a control unit which combines character strings corresponding to at least some of a plurality of regions partitioned from the one input panel based on a touch pattern formed by the tabs when a user authentication request occurs, and inputs the combined character string in response to the user authentication request. The present invention is to enable a plurality of passwords to be inputted using a plurality of tabs having the same motion pattern.
