Disclosed are a method and apparatus for changing a format of a packet. The method for changing the format of an operation administration and maintenance (OAM) packet on a network comprises the following steps: a packet format converter receives a first OAM packet from a transmission node; the packet format converter determines whether a second OAM engine of a reception node to receive the first OAM packet supports the first OAM packet or not; and when it is determined that the second OAM engine of the reception node does not support the first OAM packet, the packet format converter converts the first OAM packet into the second OAM packet. The packet format converter can realize the OAM engines different from each other, which are realized between the transmission and reception nodes to generate the OAM packets having different formats from each other.
