The method involves determining a torque reserve based on an ignition advance reserve and an air reserve. An ignition advance output (Ravr) of an internal combustion engine is determined. The determined ignition advance output of the engine is compared with a predetermined threshold value (Ravs). The air reserve is temporarily increased if the determined ignition advance output of the engine reaches the pre-determined threshold value. An independent claim is also included for an engine control computer for calculating a torque reserve at idling speed of an internal combustion engine.
