TRACKING AND ANALYZING MOBILE DEVICE ACTIVITY RELATED TO MOBILE DISPLAY CAMPAIGNS

When an in-app event, which may be any activity that occurs within a mobile application, is performed, a server may receive in-app data including a device identifier associated with a device from which the in-app event originated. The server may generate all permutations of the received device identifier, including all hashed versions of the device identifier, and store all device identifiers associated with the device in a data record. Any other click events with click data including a device identifier that matches any of the device identifiers in the data record can be recognized as originating from the same device. Hence, mobile activity may be tracked to the actual device at which the activity occurred, despite existing device identifier fragmentation. This can enable more effective analysis, such as click fraud analysis and click path analysis, of click traffic for display campaigns.

1. A method comprising, performing by a server computer:
receiving data related to a plurality of click events occurring at a plurality of mobile devices, the click events including clicking on a plurality of links associated with a plurality of display campaigns, wherein click data of each click event include at least one device identifier of a mobile device and a campaign identifier, wherein each mobile device is associated with a unique master identifier; for each of the plurality of click events:
storing the click data in a click data record in a database; conducting an analysis for a first mobile device comprising:
receiving in-app data of an in-app event of the first mobile device, the in-app data including a first device identifier, wherein the in-app event includes a first opening of a mobile application by a user or an activity with the mobile application that occurs while the mobile application is in use;generating hashed versions of the first device identifier associated with the first mobile device;storing, in a first device data record of the database, the first device identifier and the hashed versions of the first device identifier in association with a first master identifier corresponding to the first mobile device and in association with the in-app data of the in-app event;accessing the first device data record and the click data records to compare the at least one device identifier included in click data for at least a portion of the click events with one or more of the hashed versions of the first device identifier associated with the first master identifier;determining at least one click event from the click events that includes the at least one device identifier that matches at least one of the hashed versions of the first device identifier associated with the first master identifier corresponding to the first mobile device; andstoring the click data for the at least one click event in the first device data record of the database in association with the first master identifier, the in-app data of the in-app event, and the click data for click events related to the first mobile device.
