A slip-cut mechanism uses static force to hold a material layer onto a preferably smooth rotating drum, and ultrasonic energy bonds discrete pieces of the material layer to second material layer. When the trailing edge of the patch material is cut, the static force is sufficient to take that web away at the high speed consistent with the full product length.
